I’d planned to stay two nights at Hidden House Montañita, but left after the first because of several problems. The dorm felt disorganized and unclean: three of its four beds had already been used, though nobody was actually staying in them. Two of the three toilets were clogged with feces, and there was no hot water. Noise was the biggest problem. Even though it wasn’t a party night, loud music went on all night, until at least 4:30 a.m., and I could barely sleep. I also didn’t feel safe leaving money or valuables there. There were no lockers, and I heard several guests mention previous incidents of money going missing. I asked for a refund for the unused second night, but they refused. Staff said they’d already paid someone to clean the room and offered free entry to a future party instead, which didn’t solve the problem. I rarely leave early or write negative reviews, but this wasn’t clean, secure, or restful. I’d recommend looking elsewhere.

They’d double-booked my reservation, so when I arrived with a private room booked, they said there was nowhere for me to stay. After a lot of discussion, they found me a dorm bed, but it was disgusting. There were no sheets, no WiFi the whole time, and the water went out for a while. It was loud and dirty, and they still made me pay full price. The guy at the counter was pretty rude. I’d strongly recommend staying somewhere else.

The outdoor area is quite nice, and you’ll see your share of iguanas in the courtyard. Rooms are affordable, and surf rentals are fairly priced. Wednesday parties are great, with unlimited refills for $6. The staff were a mixed bag, some friendly and some quite rude. The kitchen wasn’t well stocked and there was nothing to light the stove. Our four-person room was pretty small and had no fans. It’s okay.

The showers need maintenance, and the room situation has happened to me more than once. I book a particular room, sometimes days ahead through WhatsApp or hostelword, then get told that room is "not available" and offered something else. At least the room had air conditioning. The service is bad.

I couldn't sleep at all. They played loud music over the hotel speakers through the night, and seemed not to care when guests asked them to stop or about the neighborhood. Easily my worst sleeping experience in South America. Stay away!
