We stayed for five nights and really liked the family feel. It was quiet and laid-back, unlike our previous hostal in Las Tunas. The surroundings were wonderful, and the beach was incredible, with great waves for surfers of every level.

Rodrigo is the heart of Viejamar. He's a former surf champion and Spanish TV broadcaster, now a surf bum who owns the hostel, and he's a real character, fun to spend time with. The lodging is basic but comfortable and pleasant. When I visited, two French volunteers and one Argentinian volunteer handled most of the daily work, including cleaning the cabins and dorms and making everyone's bed each day. You can easily spend several days here, or even 2-3 weeks. The surf out back isn't for beginners, but everyone can enjoy swimming there. In July and August you can watch whales from a hammock on the lovely second-floor balcony. The beach is stunning, 9.5/10. In fall, it's sunny every 1/3 days. Rodrigo gives surf lessons, and boards are available to rent for $15/day. The kitchen is shared, and you make your own meals. Eggs and bread are provided for breakfast, but you'll need to buy groceries for lunch and dinner. Rodrigo will drive into town with you for a bigger grocery run, or pick up small things for you on his daily trips.
A really laid-back hostel where the days drift by between the pool, the beach, and surfing. It's a wonderful spot to slow down and relax. Having a kitchen is a big plus, since you don't have to eat out all the time. I'd recommend it to friends.
The days go by too fast here. It's a very relaxed place right on the beach, with good waves for surfing or a sunset to watch. There's a cool pool area, and the common space sits under lovely trees and flowers. The big shared kitchen, new pool table, and chill-out area are great. Rodrigo is the highlight of viejamar, an original local surfiadore with a big heart and buena onda!
Best vibes ever. This spot is on a beautiful beach about 15 mins from Puerto Lopez, just right if you want to get away from town and spend time with the waves and other travelers. Shout-out to Jamilla and Emilie for the amazing breakfasts too ❤️
