Casa Helbling

The layout is unusual, with little staircases leading to tucked-away areas shared by only a few rooms, so you get a sense of privacy. Beds are fantastic, with no squeaks or springs to feel, and breakfast comes warm and delicious if you order the night before. Claus, one of the owners, made time each morning to offer tips and help us book tours for jungle hikes and volcanoes. This hostel goes beyond what you'd normally expect, and it really suits travelers who want it all. I could keep going, but you should experience it for yourself. Five stars all day.

The common areas were welcoming, with a guest kitchen and a place to dry laundry. You can buy fruit and vegetables across the street, and there's a place to get your clothes washed three blocks away. It's on a bus route and a short walk from the tourist districts. I stayed four nights here with a group two years ago. Claus and the staff were warm and helpful, and our room was fine, with comfortable beds, opening windows, and hot showers.

The neighborhood is quiet, even though the place is downtown Quito. Most guests seem to be German, Austrian, or Swiss, so expect to hear German spoken. Breakfast isn't included, but you can get it for a good price. I'd go back.

Casa Helbling is in an area with lots of good restaurants and bars, and it's a 20-25 minute walk from Plaza Grande. The building has a really nice design inside, the rooms are clean and big enough, and the owner and reception staff are lovely. Free wifi too. I'd recommend it to other travelers and stay again.
