Hotel Cocos

The location worked well, close to Chipipe beach and across from San Lorenzo beach, with lots of restaurants within walking distance. The $50 price for a room with two beds, one queen and one junior, seemed reasonable. The room was small, the fixtures were dated, and the shower had weak water flow.

The room itself had a lot of problems: the air conditioner was broken, the towels had big holes, there was a dead cockroach on the floor when we arrived, the bathroom had no toilet paper, and the shower pressure was terrible. The hotel felt rundown, and we found the staff rude. They sometimes ignored us or gave us dirty looks, which made us uncomfortable for asking for the room we had paid for. We stayed over New Years and had booked the only room online, a triple. At check-in they took us to a tiny room at the very back with just a double bed. We thought about staying, but we had paid the high rate for a triple, so we went back to the desk hoping to get the right room or some money back for the price difference. The girl at the front desk argued that there were only two of us and we should stay in the double. We explained that we'd paid for a triple, but she threw up her hands and said she didn't understand us. We told her we'd leave an online review. A few minutes later someone came to our room and rushed us to pack because they were moving us. They did put us in a triple, which we appreciated since that's what we'd paid for. If you want to get ripped off and treated badly, this is the place. For an enjoyable stay, don't come here. They seem to scam people consistently. Terrible, terrible hotel.

The hostal is on the malecon and reasonably priced, and it was clean and well kept. The room towels could be better. The attached restaurant was decent but a bit overpriced, and the receptionist wasn't very helpful.

The rooms are small, and not all of them face the beach. There's no parking or breakfast included, though the location is good.
