Candanchu is well located, though in summer it isn't a particularly charming place. The hotel is clean but outdated, and our room had a strange smell that lingered even after we aired it out. The young staff smiled and spoke a little English. The receptionist didn't know how to check us in, so we had to use the website ourselves. A room flyer mentioned laundry service, but reception said there wasn't one. Don't choose half board. The dinner was so poor that a 10-year-old could do better, and the Argentinian restaurant is probably a better dinner option. At breakfast, flies kept landing on the meat, the milk seemed spoiled, and the fruit was going rotten. Breakfast overall wasn't worth the price.

We stopped here overnight on our way back to the UK from Spain, since it was close to the French border for the next day's drive through France. It's mainly a ski lodge, and there didn't seem to be many people around. Reception were very helpful and check-in was quick. The dated room was very clean, and we could bring our dog. It had a tiny balcony with outstanding mountain views. We booked half board. The set menu had limited choices, and the basic food wasn't very enjoyable. In the morning, the breakfast needed more bacon, sugar, and plates. Still, it was pleasant enough for a night on the way.

We drove through the evening mist to get here, and in the morning the hotel's magnificence showed in the light, with stunning views from the south-facing terrace in bright sunshine. It's only a kilometre from France, yet feels like another world. We had a terrific à la carte dinner, and drinks are served in either a public or private lounge. Music from somewhere carried on until 3 am and affected the night.

The restaurant is fine, and the staff are helpful. The hotel isn't modern, but the rooms are warm and there's parking, with the chairlift and shops nearby. A new shower hose would be a nice improvement.
