We’ve stayed at this hotel chain in Valladolid, Spain, before, but this last night of our HONEYMOON was a letdown. We booked a suite to make the occasion special, then walked into a strong smell of cleaning chemicals that made it hard to stay comfortably. There was still visible dirt in the bathroom, which was shocking in a suite. We told reception what was wrong. The staff acknowledged the problem, but with no cleaning staff available, they could only offer us a move to a standard room. So we paid for a suite and spent the night in a regular room. The hotel later offered breakfast as compensation, but that didn’t feel like it matched the downgrade or the situation. It’s sad that what should have been a memorable final night of our honeymoon left us with such a negative impression. I hope the hotel takes more care preparing rooms and handles problems like this differently in future.

I booked at 9 pm, just before boarding a train from Madrid to Avila, and left a note saying I’d arrive at midnight. When I got there, the woman who answered the doorbell asked if I had a reservation, then told me to wait. My child and I were left outside the hotel at night for an hour. I called again after 30 minutes and many more times, but she never answered or came to check us in. I finally left to find another hotel. Four days later I saw they’d charged me for a night I never spent there. I had to return to the hotel, and they refunded the charge.

The room was clean, but that was about it. There was a hole in the bed cover, and the TV seemed ancient. When I mentioned both at reception, they said that was just how it was. Breakfast was disgusting, and I was told I couldn’t cancel it. I booked two nights for my wife and me, but got twin beds instead of one full bed. The first night, the receptionist said it couldn’t be changed and told me to come back the next day. When I did, she said I should have come in the morning. Disappointing.

It was a decent enough stay, though nothing particularly good.

The price per night was really good, and I’d definitely pick this place again if I return to Avila. I appreciated how caring one of the cleaning staff was. It was also the first time I’d stayed somewhere close to both a bus and a train station, as well as downtown.
