Hostal Cal Batista

The town and the mountains around it are beautiful, with a few pleasant parks and woodland paths for walks. The owner was nice, the room was clean, and the heating worked well in winter. There’s a restaurant, though a menu in the room or online would be useful. The bed was uncomfortable, with a worn-out mattress and a sheet that kept slipping off. Wi-Fi on the second floor was slow and kept dropping. Staff also woke me around 9 every morning, so sleeping in wasn’t really possible.

The shower had good heat and pressure, and the man at the front desk was helpful enough to call us a taxi. Some renovation work was happening, so perhaps a few improvements are planned. Still, the rooms were cold, and we had to ask for the heating to be switched on. There was a tobacco smell throughout the hotel. We also felt nudged toward buying breakfast and dinner, though on a Tuesday everything else was closed. The main issue was the atmosphere. It felt like we were staying in someone's home and were an inconvenience, rather than being guests at a Hostal. That’s why it felt like a two-star stay.

We were very pleased with the friendly, helpful service. The affordable three-course dinner was really tasty, and I'd definitely recommend the place.

Dinner was poor and took ages to arrive, with lots of fat. The room was small and noisy, right above the kitchen, and the bed shook with a bad mattress. It was cheap, which is why I gave it one star, but this was the worst hostel I've ever stayed in.
