We really enjoyed staying at Borleña, even after spending time later in a four-star parador. The rooms were a good size, clean, and full of old-world charm. It’s a spectacular family-run boutique hotel in a lovely town. I only wish we could have stayed longer, but we’ll come back another time for sure.

The restaurant is the real standout here, and worth a visit on its own. The food is excellent, and the people preparing and serving it clearly know what they’re doing. There’s no fuss or pretension. The hotel itself is comfortable, clean, and straightforward, with everything we needed.

We stopped at Hotel Borlena on the way to catch the ferry in Santander, about 50 miles away. Javier really looks after his guests, and we loved this quiet, clean little family-run hotel. It has a beautiful, slightly Laura Ashley feel, and a fantastic little restaurant. There’s a riverside walk nearby with a cycleway, and a prehistoric cave about 10 miles away that’s worth visiting.

Up in the Cantabrian mountains on N623, this is a beautiful hotel. The staff are lovely and the food is great.
