Hotel Mendi Green

We were so unhappy that we didn't stay at all. The website photos were very cleverly done, and they wanted to charge extra for using a room that wasn't even a bedroom. We won't go anywhere near this place again. There's a full review on Trip Advisor.

We left at midnight after checking the rooms and realizing they weren't what we'd booked. One double room had no bathroom, despite our reservation being for two double rooms with ensuite bathrooms. The owner just replied, "Yes, WELL, THAT'S HOW IT IS," and went downstairs. The other room did have a bathroom, but there was a spider-like tenant. Both had badly worn mattresses that sank in the middle, and old, worn bedding that seemed unwashed, though it didn't smell. The room without a bathroom also had exposed electrical outlets, two beds side by side, a desk, a shelf used as a wardrobe, and a TV. We noticed all this during a quick 10-15 minute check after arriving. We'd booked through Booking.com, where the reservation was confirmed and charged straight away. We checked reception hours and thought we'd arrive on time, but called anyway to give an estimated arrival. The reply was an uninterested-sounding "okay, no problem." After driving all day, we reached the village around 11:30 PM. A little girl playing alone in the square pointed us toward the hotel. The door was locked. We rang and called both the landline and mobile several times, even hearing the phone ring outside, but got no answer. After about 10 or 15 minutes, the owner finally opened up. He looked disheveled and didn't seem dressed or prepared to welcome hotel guests. At reception, he had us fill out registration forms, then told us to leave our shoes in a cabinet divided by room. Each compartment had used Ikea slippers, which he assured us were clean. We went along with this rule, which he only imposed after we'd paid and handed in our forms. He put two of us in what he called an "elevator" with our suitcases while he escorted the other two up the stairs. It was just a freight elevator. At the top, he called from halfway down the stairs, pointing out that a key on a desk in one room opened the bathroom, which was "that one over there." We didn't like the rooms or his attitude and manner, and the accommodation wasn't what we'd reserved, so we decided to leave. When I started explaining why, he cut me off and said, "You don't have to explain to me, you should go where you feel comfortable." I asked for a refund. He said he'd return the full amount, but refused to give me any proof, adding, "On top of everything, they're suspicious." Two or three days later, the full refund arrived, just as he'd promised.

The rooms and hotel were clean, but I found the place far too expensive for what it offers. The sauna is shared with the whole hotel and nothing special; it seemed to be there just to push up the price. It's very isolated. I didn't care for the setting myself, though anyone who loves a bucolic atmosphere might find it perfect.

The service and the apartment both disappointed me. The walls are plastic, and whenever you ask the manager for something, he pulls a face. We couldn't get into the jacuzzi because the water was freezing, and he didn't seem willing to change it or do anything about it. Who knows how long that water had been sitting there. They also claim to have parking and a private garden, but neither seemed to exist. We only stayed because we'd already paid. I would never come back. It's a disgrace.
