Getting into central Calella on foot was easy, and the hotel itself was generally clean and looked after. The rooms were disappointing for amenities: no slippers, pens, or sewing kits. The elevators weren't very practical, and both breakfast and dinner were mediocre. Staff knew very little English, so communicating was difficult. Keep in mind that getting to Barcelona is difficult and quite expensive.

The food was good and the location is perfect. The hotel itself was okay, but paying extra for a sea view didn't get us one, just a view of trees. The bathroom door was only about 2 feet from the bed's pillow, with a big gap you could see straight through to your partner while they were using the toilet. Not much privacy, or a great setup for hygiene.

My room was awkwardly laid out, with the washbasin in the hallway. There were stains on the ceiling, cobwebs, and curtains left in disarray. I also noticed cleanliness problems on the balcony, in the spa, bar, lobby, pool, and elevators. The dining area wasn't clean either, and guests had to hunt for plates that were supposedly washed. The food was cold, bland, and didn't seem freshly prepared. Housekeeping staff were friendly and doing their best, but cleanliness across the hotel was poor. Reception staff and waiters came across as unfriendly, and the manager seemed unwelcoming and uninterested. For a hotel advertised as four stars, my stay was far below what I expected. Based on this experience, I'd give it one star. The value for money was catastrophic.

How this place got a 4-star rating is beyond me. The walls are so thin that you hear neighbours talking and using the bathroom clearly. I had to repair the shampoo dispenser myself, and the coffee sachets weren't replenished daily. There was no iron or inside door lock, and the balcony offered very little privacy. The cleaners made so much noise outside that the “Do Not Disturb” sign was pointless.
