The balcony view was gorgeous, and the roomy apartment had a sensible layout. We tried to keep our spirits up and laugh things off, but for the price we expected much better. The kitchen was shabby and hard to use: the cupboards stuck, there was no dishwasher, the toaster and kettle didn’t work, and there was no grater. The kettle held only half a liter, so we heated water in a little pot over a small flame. There were just two tea mugs for eight, no spatula, no pan or saucepan lids, and the big frying pan was damaged, with its Teflon peeling. Our eggs and meat ended up covered in burnt bits. The gas stove was old, the hood had no buttons and didn’t work, and it wouldn’t stop the gas if the flame went out. There were only six chairs for eight, the table was small, and two chairs were broken, so you had to sit carefully. The sofa was greasy and very dirty, and the floor was filthy. We got just two garbage bags for eight people over ten days. We saw a cockroach twice. There were no blankets, and it was cold at night. The air conditioner only cools. The shower water was lukewarm, and one shower was tiny, just 50 x 50 cm. You couldn’t bend to reach shampoo without opening the door. The washing machine beside the shower gave a strong electric shock, 220 volts, if you touched it by accident. There were no locks on the rooms or bathrooms. The doors squeaked loudly enough to wake everyone, maybe even the neighbors, when someone got up at night. The gas ran out, leaving us without a working stove or hot water. The landlord didn’t answer the phone, so we bought a replacement cylinder, but the landlady refused to pay us back. There was also a vicious, noisy German shepherd beneath the apartment. It barked at everyone and tried to jump off the balcony, which was frightening. That’s all I can think of for now; I may add more if I remember. I hope the landlady reads this and fixes the problems. For 10,000 euros, the apartment could have been made into a nice luxury place.
