The building is gorgeous, and I like that the government is preserving historic places like this. The library shows the problem, though: it feels arranged for photos, with a scattered, disorganized pile of printed material rather than somewhere to read or get work done. The room switches are confusing, and figuring out the TV could leave you wishing you had a grandchild along to help. I wouldn't come back for a second stay, but it's worth staying once for the pictures.

As architects, we left disappointed. The hotel could become a place people from all over the world would love to stay, but it needs quite a bit of improvement and more care with the details. We also felt the effects of substantial cost-cutting in the room amenities and at breakfast. It's still a great hotel, and we think the Paradores group's overall strategy deserves credit.

The area around the hotel is beautiful, and the winery next door is well worth a visit. Book the tour ahead of time. The information I got there was some of the most interesting and useful I've heard on a winery tour. The hotel itself is a huge, beautiful old monastery, with spacious corridors and lovely communal areas. Like the other parador hotels, it's a wonderful place to stay, and the staff are consistently helpful, pleasant, and professional.

The old place has been well preserved. As you walk through the lobby, it feels like joining the monks in their solemn procession back in the 11th century.

The winery beside the hotel has some unusual grape varieties and is worth a quick visit. Don't skip the library, either. Set in a small town in the Asturias mountains, this stunning hotel is a tastefully renovated old monastery, in fact the third largest in Spain, and the price is reasonable.
