Hotel Alcázar de La Reina

The beds and pillows were comfortable, the bathroom was spacious, and our room had lovely views over the plains. Still, the hotel looked much better in the photos than it did in person. Happy hour was advertised at the entrance and in the lift as starting at 6pm, but there wasn't one. The bar and restaurant opened at 7:30pm, and there was no coffee or tea available in the room either. When we asked about the happy hour sign, the receptionist just shrugged and said she couldn't do anything. Dinner was a really bad experience. The young staff did their best, but seemed inexperienced and not well trained. My beef tenderloin was sent back to the kitchen twice because it was completely raw. We waited 1.5 hours, got no apology or offer of anything complimentary, and ended up leaving most of the meal uneaten. I still paid €24 for the beef. The restaurant's food and service weren't what I'd expect from a four star hotel. The room also stayed hot even though the centrally controlled thermostat was apparently set to cool, and that affected our sleep.

I chose this hotel because my motorcycle had broken down and it was the nearest place. The rooms were excellent and there was secure parking. Oto was a huge help arranging recovery so the bike could be repaired. Without him, it would've been a nightmare, so thank you. The location is fantastic too, and I'd happily visit again.

The bar and bistro served delicious food and wine, and the staff were lovely and patient with my Spanglish. Everyone was accommodating, nothing felt like too much trouble. I loved the authentic, rustic feel of the old building and its thoughtful furnishings. My room faced the pool and bar terrace, but it was quiet and dark at night, just how I like it. A perfect mid-November stay in a town steeped in history.

The breakfast buffet was wonderful, with cereal, yoghurt, toast, fruit, cold meats, cheeses, hot dishes, eggs, sausages, bacon, beans and pastries. The woman in the breakfast room did a first class job keeping things stocked, arranging everything and clearing tables. I suggested they add photos of this spread. Reception was very friendly and helpful, and they upgraded us when we arrived. The evening meal didn't feel like good value to us, though sitting outside on the terrace by the pool was lovely. The rooms are a little tired but very comfortable. The bed valance had a bad mop stain from when the floor was washed.
