El Mesón de Castrojeriz

We had breakfast here twice and tried the menu del Día. Came back for more because everyone was so welcoming.

The people here made the place for me. Andrés behind the bar was warm and funny, and we traded stories about the trail, towns, and life. The staff were patient with my clumsy Spanish and blistered pilgrims, and friendly without making a fuss. It has the feel of a rustic local spot, with people chatting at the bar and old laughter in the walls. After slogging through mud and stormy weather, I found the traditional food hearty, tasty, and plentiful, just what I needed. Drinks were covered, everything was spotless, and the prices felt fair. It has a real Camino atmosphere, with muddy boots, sunburnt faces, and stories being shared. I’d absolutely recommend it. Five stars, and a toast to the people who feed you body and soul. It may not be open in the winter months.

The location is acceptable, but that’s about the only good thing. They’re supposed to open at 6, yet there was no sign of activity. Don’t bother looking for it. Avoid it and choose somewhere better in CASTROJERIZ.

A fellow pilgrim asked a local where to find good food and pointed me here, just as I was starting the Meseta section of the Camino. The pilgrim menu was delicious, generous, and affordable. It was my best meal since Najera, and my best so far on the Camino. I’d highly recommend stopping in for lunch or dinner.
