El Rincón de San Benito

The Hueznar paradise was already booked, so we stayed here this year instead. We ended up loving it. The place is well equipped, and the village is beautiful.

The house is in a lovely, peaceful spot right in the village center, which makes its poor upkeep all the more disappointing. It took us a while to find it, tucked away in an alley, and the lack of cleanliness was apparent as soon as we walked in. There was dust, cobwebs and insects throughout, plus dirty sofa covers, pillowcases and blankets. We know insects are normal in the mountains, but the cobwebs could have been cleaned. Several walls had damp and mold, and we had to clean the bathtub with bleach before we felt comfortable using it. That was the reason we'd chosen this place, and why the weekend price had seemed fair. Even in summer we felt cold because the house was cool. We couldn't keep the windows shut because of the smell from the damp. The woman who greeted us was friendly and said we could stay until Sunday afternoon since there were no other bookings, but we didn't want to remain another hour. Such a shame, because the house itself is lovely. The cleanliness was awful.

The house has a nice look, but it's badly run down and pretty dirty. We had to clean the bathroom on arrival, and the sofa and cushions felt sticky. Then the butane ran out and the replacement canister they gave us was empty, so we couldn't even shower.

The water came out green, and we felt it was completely contaminated. Smoke kept pouring from the chimney, and if we hadn't noticed, it could have caused an accident. We left because of these problems and asked for a refund for at least one of the three nights. The response was dismissive, with the water issue blamed on the town council.
