Hotel Castillo El Burgo

BED BUGS, AND MANAGEMENT IGNORES IT. DO NOT STAY HERE. This was the worst accommodation experience I’ve ever had. At 2am I woke up itchy, with bites on my body. I first thought it might be a mosquito, but when I lifted the blanket, I saw two bed bugs crawling across the bed. I filmed them to show the staff. I know bed bugs can happen when you travel, and I wasn’t trying to make a fuss. I cleared out my things and went to reception to let them know. I hoped they might help with washing my clothes and perhaps offer a refund. The man helping me was initially shocked and sympathetic. After he called his boss, though, he became rude and dismissive, insisting there were no bed bugs and that I was making it up. He went upstairs to “check” the room, but I had bites all over me consistent with bed bugs and a video I’d just taken of the two bugs. He got angrier and kept telling me to go back to the room, which I wasn’t going to do. There were bed bugs. We went back and forth for a while. Since the hotel also operates as a 24 hour truck stop, I sat at a table to wait until it was a bit later and I could leave. It was about 3am. The man came over and told me I had to leave, effectively trying to put a young woman out on the street alone at 3am with nowhere to go. I was very upset, with bites all over, a bag of clothes that needed washing, and a staff member yelling at me to leave. A local woman thankfully managed to calm him. I stayed another hour, but left at 4am because he was intimidating me. I booked through booking.com and intended to post a review there. When I went to do so, they had cancelled my booking, even though I had checked in and paid cash for the stay. I believe this was to stop me from writing a review. Bed bugs are a reality of travel. But an accommodation that turns a blind eye to a problem shouldn’t be supported. Guests could keep getting them here and potentially carry them to other accommodations. For the record, it was room 101.

Clean room and good staff. The air conditioning takes the edge off the heat, but it can barely keep up. You also have to leave your room card in the slot.

I found the hotel really comfortable, and the restaurant food was excellent.
