Hotel Cala Saona & Spa

The staff were courteous and incredibly hospitable throughout, which made an already wonderful stay even better. The hotel is gorgeous, tucked into a quiet bay, and the sunset is indescribable. Our room was unbelievably great. We’ll definitely be back.

The dinner menu was our main letdown. The hotel only offers a tasting menu of around 18 courses, which can be expensive and isn’t the sort of thing you’d want every night if you’re after a beach-style meal like grilled fish. In every other way, we had a wonderful stay at Cala Saona Hotel, right across from beautiful Cala Saona. The setting for the sunset is breathtaking, and the hotel restaurant and bar add to the experience. From arrival, the staff were warm and helped with our bags. The polite woman who welcomed us made us feel at home, and Fernanda did a great job cleaning our room, which was spotless. The rooms are very clean and comfortable, though on the small side. We paid extra for a sea-view balcony, and despite my initial hesitation, it was well worth it. The view over Cala Saona was stunning, and the roomy balcony gave us space to relax and enjoy the surroundings. Breakfast had an impressive range and quality. Eggs are cooked fresh to order in whatever style you ask for, and the ingredients tasted excellent. I especially liked that avocado was on the menu. The Spanish ham was excellent too. Coffee was good, though it was surprising they didn’t serve a proper cappuccino, considering how popular the island is with Italians. The espresso more than made up for it. We didn’t use the spa, but it looked inviting, and it’s included in the stay, which is a nice perk. We appreciated that the hotel welcomes families with babies and children while still keeping a peaceful atmosphere for all kinds of guests. I was surprised it isn’t rated five stars, since it offers many of the services and amenities you’d expect at that level. The room size might be the one mismatch, but the generous balcony and overall quality make that a minor point. The price does reflect a five-star stay, which makes sense for such a prime location. Cala Saona Hotel brings together a beautiful setting, good amenities, and outstanding service. For a small island like Formentera, it exceeded our expectations, and I highly recommend it for enjoying Cala Saona with comfort and hospitality.

We only had dinner at the restaurant, and it was fabulous. They take traditional favorites like Russian salads and croquettes and give them an exceptionally high-class twist. Everything was flawless, the service was lovely, and the espresso martini was great too.

If you want to be looked after and feel like you’re somewhere special on holiday, don’t come here. Two stars at best.
