The sustainable design is a big part of what makes ITER special. The houses are beautiful, thoughtfully built, and closely connected to their surroundings. We spent three nights in Casa Rio and would especially recommend it to anyone interested in sustainable architecture. We picked up fresh fish at the market and cooked it on the shared grill, which was a nice tip for future guests. The place feels tucked away, with a short walk to some lovely, secluded beaches on the southern coast, yet it’s easy to reach from S. Tenerife airport. One of our most affordable and enjoyable travel stays.

The house and its surroundings are spacious and lovely, and the architecture is really cool. It’s a good choice if you want a bit of solitude. Two things made the stay harder, though: there’s no heating, so the nights and sleep got quite cold, and planes coming in overhead create quite a lot of noise.

The houses are distinctive and comfortable to live in, and I liked learning how ITER works toward low-impact living and sustainable energy production. It’s also a wonderful area for nature, with a national park, a volcano, and quiet beaches just a few minutes’ walk away. We came with a disabled person, though, and found there were too many steps. A ramp would have made access easier. There’s also noise from the nearby airport at busy times, and the industrial harbor close by is very unattractive. Even with those drawbacks, this was one of the loveliest places I’ve stayed, and I’d recommend it to couples and families looking for nature and peace.

You can hear the airport at times, but otherwise it’s very quiet. I loved these modern, interesting houses and would recommend them. You do need a car to get there, though parking is easy and free.

We stopped by to see some of the houses rather than staying in one. It’s an interesting place to visit with a guide, or to spend a couple of days or a weekend. The surroundings are dry and very windy, and the buildings are adapted to those conditions.
