The bar is good, and the building has an unusual look. The people were very nice.

The cyclist setup was a real bonus: locked, secure storage, plus a track pump, stand, work bench and basic tools. I was in front-facing Room 134, which had a small enclosed private terrace overlooking the castle. The hotel has a lovely rustic feel and typical Spanish style. Staff were excellent, and some spoke English really well. I skipped dinner there, but breakfast was good. Great value for money.

There wasn't much on the menu for my vegetarian group, but the staff made special dishes for us every evening. They were so enthusiastic and kind. Maybe the best service I've ever had.

I had a ticket invite to a dinner party hosted by one of my clients, but the receptionist still wouldn't let me in. For me, a 4-star rating in Spain might be more like 2 to 3 stars in the UK. I don't think the place would make it into the AA or RAC guides.

The Castillo, a 16th Century landmark, is La Calahorra's main draw, though it only opens on Wednesdays. The town itself is small and simple. At the hotel, the rooms have that typical Spanish hotel style, the staff were really friendly, and the bar was cozy and well stocked. There's also a lovely outdoor seating area. For a good local restaurant, drive about 10 minutes along the A337 to Ferreira and try El Hogar de Ferreira. The A337 also makes for a nice drive up into the Sierra Nevadas.
