You’ll get plenty of practice staying awake here, because rest is hard to come by. I’ve been less frightened coming out of the haunted house at PortAventura. The walls are so thin you can hear your neighbor snoring, and it feels like you can sense the noise at your neck. The elevator right behind you sounds like hell’s chains. The cleaning staff don’t seem to know how to keep the noise down either. I’ve seen elephants walk into a hardware store more quietly. Lucifer in Hell would give you a warmer welcome than these people. They’re awful.

At 60€ a night, this felt like a very expensive disaster. The room smelled intensely damp and revolting every time we came in, and the air conditioning didn’t work. I asked for an extra pillow, but they said there weren’t any rooms available, so I didn’t get one. We couldn’t sleep. The walls were paper thin, and we heard girls in the next room talking every night, all night, until 6 a.m. Trucks unloading in the garage below made a real racket. We were right by the elevator, which sounded like a nuclear reactor every time it moved, as my boyfriend put it.
