Sol y Mar Surf Camp

This was a cold, uncomfortable stay in December. It might work fine in summer, but in wind and rain it felt more like camping than a restful hostel. The Spanish indoor-outdoor style means there are windows without glass, so the rain came in. It was 12 degrees, with 25 mph winds and rain while I was there. I cooked and sat around in joggers and a winter coat, and the corridor flooded. A few practical things were frustrating too. Showers only got lukewarm, which I didn't stick around for in winter. You get one paper-thin pillow, and renting another costs extra. Lockers cost another 10€. The kitchenettes are very sparsely equipped: blunt, bent knives, burnt pans, and one gross chopping board. Cooking anything beyond pasta is a challenge, though there's generous fridge and freezer space. It can be noisy if you're a light sleeper, since doors have no handles and need to be slammed shut. The hostel itself has a quiet atmosphere and a broad age range, around 24 to 70. Most guests seemed to be doing Spanish language school or windsurf courses. The main strip's bars and restaurants are within walking distance, and street parking is good, though the one-way system on this side of town is a bit of a faff. Paella night was social, but at 25€ per person I found it frankly extortionate. One pan was made for about 12 people, with roughly one prawn and one mussel each. The woman also brought a friend who ate, so it seemed like a quick 300€ profit for her. If I'd known the price and what to expect, I wouldn't have signed up and would have gone to a proper restaurant for a better meal. The woman was quite assertive when collecting cash afterward. I had to walk to two different ATMs at 10 pm because the nearby one she directed me to was broken. None of the arrangements were explained beforehand; there was just a blank sign-up sheet titled “paella.” Debora was lovely, but this older woman wasn't as approachable. For context, I've worked and volunteered at three hostels in the last four years, in Indonesia, Australia, and the UK.

Really good breakfast, lovely people, and everything was very clean. It's close to all the important places, with such a great atmosphere. Love ❤️

The rooftop was a great spot to sunbathe, hang out with other guests, or meet up before dinner. The hostel is only a few minutes from the beach and the town's best restaurants. Rooms were neat, the bathrooms were plentiful and cleaned daily, and the staff were very nice. Valentina and Angels did a great job and went out of their way to help me. I booked through Flag Beach surf school, but this is a good place for anyone visiting Corralejo for leisure or other activities. A special tip: try yoga with Angels at the beach in the early morning. Watching the sunrise there was the best.

I really enjoyed staying here. The hosts and other travellers were lovely, the rooms were clean, and the location was great.
