Hostel Layos, Toledo

We had lots of fun.

The place is far from town, and the rooms are uncomfortable: thin mattresses, very soft flat pillows, and bathrooms outside the rooms. The doors can be opened from outside, with no latch or other security. The bathrooms were disgusting, with an overflowing bin and papers scattered across the floor. The food was hard and cold, and even the glasses and other cutlery were dirty. There was only one working outlet. The fan looked ready to fall over, and turning it on meant using a brush to reach the switch above the door. The only lighting came from vending machines that took money without giving anything.

The service was good, and breakfast was acceptable. The rooms are huge because they’re meant to be shared, but for a weekend as a couple this really isn’t the right fit. The beds aren’t the same size, so pushing them together still doesn’t let you sleep together, and the mattresses are quite hard. When I went to shower, the water was lukewarm, almost cold, so I couldn’t shower. It’s clearly a youth hostel for groups, as the sign says, and I don’t think it should rent to individuals. It’s fine for a day trip with young people, but I wouldn’t recommend it for a quiet, romantic weekend with your partner.
