Rural Matsa

Rooms were clean, but the breakfast was about as basic as it gets. The hotel sits at the edge of a business park, which is a strange spot, and I was charged €5 for a small bag of ice. Not much to recommend.

The breakfast was okay, though compared with similar hotels on our trip it was missing fruit, eggs, and yogurt. One staff member was somewhat friendly, while the other was curt and unfriendly. The decor felt dated and strange, and I didn't think it was good value, even though our package included the price. We were booked here by our Camino outfitter, but this place isn't rural at all. It's in an industrial park beside a freeway, with large trucks passing through. There aren't any nearby bars or restaurants, and the hotel has neither a restaurant nor a bar, so lunch or dinner means walking a mile or taking the commuter train. Nearby, we saw factories, warehouses, and a run-down residential building with burning garbage. I wouldn't choose to stay here again.

The owners arranged a lovely meal for us at a local restaurant, and it was the best food we had on our trip. We stayed one night while walking the Camino and had a good stay.

I liked being near the train, which gets you into Bilboa in about 20 minutes, and the owner was friendly and helpful. She even let me into my room early when I arrived ahead of time, and can arrange an Uber to nearby restaurants since there aren't any very close by. The hotel was very clean, with a comfortable bed, a strong hot shower, and a quiet room. The TV was larger than at most budget places I've stayed. Breakfast was very good, with fresh orange juice, croissant, bread, ham, cheese, and coffee. Glad I stayed here!
