Hotel Pugide

The green surroundings and the quiet made this a real breath of fresh air for us. Waking to the sheep bells was such a happy part of the stay, and it's close to all the beautiful places around Asturias. The owners and staff are lovely, the rooms were kept very clean, and we loved the typical Spanish breakfast. We didn't try dinner this time, though we'd been told it's Asian cuisine and I'm sure it's good. There was an extraordinary heat spell for the first two days, which we hadn't expected. There's no air conditioning in the rooms, but normally it isn't needed. We came for a quiet, peaceful break and got just that. We'll visit Asturias again, and hope to return to this small, tranquil hotel.

I wasn't staying at the hotel this time, since I was with a friend in Puertas de Vidiago, but I want to mention the restaurant. It has a small dining area, maybe 20 seats, for hotel guests and the public. It's busy in high season and on weekends for good reason: tasty, fresh, homemade food, quality ingredients, fair prices, and a cuisine you wouldn't expect in a tiny village between the mountains and sea in rural Asturias. The cook is from the Philippines and makes delicious dishes from her country using local ingredients. I think traditional Asturian food is the best in Spain, and this food isn't Asturian, but the quality is just as good. If Philippine cuisine is new to you, give it a try. Book a table!

It's a two-star hotel with five-star service. The grounds and rooms were kept meticulously, and the co-owner, who's a trained pastry chef, made pastries that my husband and I thought were the best of our 30 days travelling around Spain. If we're in the area, we'll make a point of staying here again.

Comfy rooms, great food and atmosphere, and multilingual staff who were unbelievably helpful. The location is A1.
