The square out front was lively, with lots of cafés and benches where you can sit. The lifts are lovely too, and you can watch the square as you go up and down. It’s interesting that the museum used to be a hospital. We visited from 7 to 9 PM, when entry is free. They open the entrance at seven, and the queue moves quickly. The second floor has the most interesting works, with beautiful paintings. We weren’t very keen on the fourth floor, which has quite a lot of modern art and installations.

Guernica was magnificent in person, and the museum is large enough to spend at least 2-3 hours in. I liked this collection by Picasso, Salvator Dali and Joan Miró, along with works by several other talented artists, much more than the Prado. The layout made it much easier to find the pieces. The temporary contemporary exhibitions were pleasant if you’re short on time, though they stood out less than the permanent collection.

Seeing Guernica in person is worth the trip. It’s massive, stunning and moving. The rest of the museum felt a little lackluster to me, though it has an extensive Spanish contemporary art collection and some interesting works by Dali and Miro, alongside the Picasso collection. I think the visit would have been better if I’d spent time reading about the artists and pieces. The entry line was very long, but we booked through Viator with a tour guide and skipped it. It didn’t cost much more than entry tickets alone, so I’d recommend that option.

04/04 If you want to take photos, I wouldn’t recommend going during the free admission hours. The Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía is in Madrid near Atocha station and is part of the city’s Art Triangle, with the Prado Museum and Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum. Spain’s national museum of 20th-century and contemporary art is best known for modern Spanish works by Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí and Joan Miró. It occupies a former hospital, with modern architectural additions alongside the historic building. Its central highlight is Picasso’s monumental Guernica, painted in response to the bombing of the Basque town during the Spanish Civil War. It’s regarded as a powerful anti-war statement in modern art. There are also changing exhibitions, photography, video art and installations, so the museum reflects a range of evolving artistic movements. It’s one of Madrid’s key places for understanding modern Spanish and European art history.

Even if modern art isn’t usually your thing, Museo Reina Sofía can leave a strong impression. I found the building beautiful, with lots of natural light and an easy flow that kept the visit relaxed rather than tiring. The blend of historic architecture and newer elements suits the exhibitions well. Picasso’s Guernica is the standout. Seeing it in person felt completely different, and it has an intensity that made me stop and spend time looking. The rest of the collection kept me interested too. Some works made me think, while others were simply enjoyable to look at, without needing to analyze everything. It’s worth a visit in Madrid, and doesn’t feel cold or boring. Even if you don’t remember every artist or movement later, you leave feeling you’ve seen something meaningful. It also works well for a laid-back visit, without pressure to see it all.
