The hotel feels elegant and peaceful, with lovely design and several thoughtfully arranged places to eat and relax. The welcome from the doormen was warm and polished, and that level of attentive, genuinely caring service continued throughout the stay. Everything felt easy and personal. I didn’t get a chance to use the spa because my stay was short, but that gives me a reason to come back.

I’ve spent extended periods at Rosewood properties, including several months at the extraordinary Hôtel de Crillon, A Rosewood Hotel, so I came to Madrid with a clear idea of what the brand can be. Hôtel de Crillon has a kind of brightness and precision where every detail seems to belong. Rosewood Villa Magna currently feels subdued and heavy by comparison. The common spaces don’t make you want to linger, the lighting feels unconsidered, and there’s little sense of theatricality or precision. The service is there, but it doesn’t feel coordinated. Staff conversations sometimes break the quiet, plates can sit around, and coffee arrived without much finesse. Once, it even had noticeable sediment, something I can’t imagine at the Paris hotel. Breakfast also felt more routine than thoughtfully put together. The fruit selection was modest, the buffet lacked energy, and local products weren’t given the attention they deserve. Nothing was offensive, but nothing lifted the experience either. The same feeling carries into the rooms. They’re composed and correct, but don’t have much soul. The mattress doesn’t envelop you, the lighting isn’t flattering, and the atmosphere doesn’t transport you. There’s no particular scent or arrival ritual to establish a sense of place, and no story connecting guests to the property’s history or Madrid. I sense management, but not vision, and operation without artistry. The Salamanca district is undeniably a great location, but a fine neighborhood can’t give a hotel its own identity. Hôtel de Crillon, A Rosewood Hotel, makes its details feel inevitable and irreplaceable. Villa Magna currently feels interchangeable. This isn’t a condemnation, just a contrast, and that contrast makes the difference clear.

We had a lovely stay, and there are options for everyone. The hotel has an elegant, traditional feel with a modern touch. Nothing disappointed us. Thanks for the hospitality.

The outdoor areas near the ski chalets were where I noticed the service most, and it was really disappointing. After spending a ridiculous amount on tea and coffee, I expected basic kindness, but the waitstaff and the rest of the team were some of the most unpleasant people I’ve encountered. As someone who regularly reviews luxury hotels, I can say this wasn’t the kind of service I expected from a place at this level. It overshadowed the beautiful surroundings and the high price. I hope management takes this seriously and improves the guest experience.

It’s a beautiful place to meet for a meal, especially at Christmas, when it feels amazing. The restaurant is lovely, as is the rest of the hotel. The service was pretty bad, though. The food and everything else were great.
