Deluxe Hostels & Suites Merida

Being able to park our motorcycle right beside the property was a real plus, and we could walk to all the attractions from there. The room was spotless and had plenty of outlets, which can be hard to find. What really stood out, though, was the gentleman at reception. His care and attention made us feel special, and he was exactly what great customer service should look like. We’re platinum elite members with a major hotel chain, and we enjoyed this stay more than many of their other properties we’ve visited. We’d recommend it without hesitation.

The pool was the highlight, and in a hot town like this, it felt essential. Breakfast was also great value and much easier than trying to find something in town. We’d booked one of the cheapest rooms, but it was perfectly adequate. A little small, maybe, though we hardly spent time in it. The air-conditioning was too cold, which was the one thing we didn’t like.

It was very quiet at night, and the location worked well, close to downtown and a park for running. The owner and staff were so friendly and gave us everything we needed to explore and enjoy Merida. Our special accessible bathroom didn’t have a shower partition, so water ended up across the floor. I wonder if a glass screen with a sliding door could be fitted in a way that works for guests with disabilities.

The mattresses were really comfortable, and the staff were friendly. Most spoke English. The place was clean and modern, and the pool should be nice in summer. Still, some of the design choices were frustrating. The thick, new mattresses had been put on standard bunk beds meant for mattresses up to 15cm, not 28cm, so there was much less headroom. Sitting up or getting out of bed suddenly was awkward, even for someone who isn’t claustrophobic. Finding the place was also a problem. Google Maps had it tagged correctly, but entering the address from Booking put us about 80m away, with no visual clue where to go. When I called that night, the desk staff member couldn’t guide me because of limited English. The bathroom’s non-slip tiles always looked dirty, and it was impossible to rinse the shower tray or clean up the hair left by a dormmate. It felt like a place designed to look premium and complaint-proof, but without much practical hostel experience behind the choices. It is called “Deluxe,” after all.
