Hotel Velada Mérida

The room was very good, and parking was convenient, but the stay had several problems. A family celebration meant children were running around loudly, including on our fifth-floor landing. Reception said they couldn't do anything. The elevator beside our room made a loud grinding sound, waking us at night and early in the morning. Breakfast was poor, especially the worst orange juice we've ever tasted. After we got home, we found we had been charged for two nights instead of one. I complained about the noise, the elevator, and the extra charge. After a lot of back and forth, the hotel kindly gave us a 50% discount. In our view, this isn't a four-star hotel.

Check-in was easy, and the staff were especially friendly and helpful. The secure parking right beside the hotel was very convenient. The main letdown was breakfast: the hot food, fresh fruit, and juice were poor quality. There was also a noisy night, with tour groups being loud and boorish and doors banging constantly. That part wasn't the hotel's fault.

The rooms were clean, comfortable, and very good. In the evenings the restaurant was good, and the coffee was good too. Breakfast was another matter, with food, dishes, and cutlery running out and empty containers left around. One morning, with no cups available, they offered us cereal bowls for our drinks. The bar also seemed seriously understaffed, so getting a drink was almost impossible.

We had a pleasant stopover, with the main sights close by, especially the amphitheatre. Our room was clean and spacious, and the parking felt safe and secure and cost a reasonable amount compared with other hotels. Breakfast was adequate, though I thought the selection was limited. That didn't take away from our lovely stay.
