Elba Motril Beach & Business Resort

The hotel staff were AMAZING, kind, and very attentive. The breakfast buffet was substantial, really nice, and clean. The building itself was a strange mix: huge and glamorous, with a new entrance and hallways but very aged room furniture and dining room. Even the bathrooms seemed both updated and worn at once. When I arrived, a drinking glass was missing from the bathroom. Later I found it in the shower, about a tenth full of a milky, watery liquid. It was disgusting. I told the front desk and left it in the hallway. They apologized, but it stayed there until I checked out the next morning. We skipped dinner after that. We were there on the night of June 4, and Motril felt abandoned. The only open restaurants we could find were at the hotel and across the street, plus a tiny market about two blocks west. Several other restaurants looked as if they'd shut one night and never reopened, with pots and pans piled in the kitchens and dirty dishes still on tables. This was the weirdest hotel stay I had during my three weeks in Spain. The place had a creepy, aging feel despite the lovely staff.

The area is quiet and not very developed. The beach wasn't to my taste, but the hotel has a pleasant little pool with loungers. The rooms and hotel are clean and comfortable. It's not luxurious, though it does have some charm, and the dining is modest.

We'd never heard of Montril, since we tend to visit places like Granada and Madrid, but we were made to feel very welcome. The hotel was so relaxing that I've already booked its sister hotel in Almeria for next week. The staff are wonderful, and some speak good English, which helps when our Spanish is getting worse. There was free entertainment during our stay, and all the acts were really good. I even joined in as a magician's assistant. Hilarious fun. The food was exceptional, and breakfast, lunch, and dinner were all reasonably priced. We ate as much as we could manage from the restaurant's three or four courses for €20 per person, and I wanted to include some photos of the food. The pool area is glorious. Covered parking on site costs €7 a day and is well worth it. I highly recommend the hotel and hope people support it. The area could use investment, but plenty of Spanish guests come for weekends. There are also two large motorhome and camping sites close by, which I've noted because we have a motorhome.
