Pensión Albergue Turístico Salceda

The restaurant service really brought my review down to two stars. We sat down at 6:59 pm, but the server wasn’t attentive and spoke no more than two words of English. Her manner and efficiency were way below par, basically no service, and our food arrived around 8 pm. We were drawn to this Albergue/Hotel by the swimming pool, even though it’s a little off the Camino, but it got cold after we arrived and we didn’t use it. Check-in was very smooth, though I wouldn’t describe the hosts as warm. We paid over USD$100 for a semi-basement room with one window facing the road. The air didn’t feel fresh, the modern bathroom had dim lighting, and cleaning could have been more thorough: I could see dust under the bed and chair. I wouldn’t recommend it to family or friends walking the Camino.

The location in the countryside was very peaceful. The manager made me a nice breakfast to take along when I left early for the Camino, and they called a wonderful masseuse who did a great job. Great service.

The family who run the place are friendly and very warm. It’s 500-600 m off the road, but definitely worth coming for a night. After a day of walking, the swimming pool was perfect, and the food was amazing. Food service runs from 7:00 am to 9:00 pm, and you can get breakfast here before setting off the next day. I can’t believe it only cost 20 euro. 🥰

The hostess works hard, handling the desk, washing clothes for guests and serving food. The place has been run by the same family for three generations so far. The chef is the son of a world-class chef, and the paella is like a gumbo. It’s the best paella in Spain, period. It’s a quiet, casual place to get your energy back, about a 10-minute walk from the Camino path. Walk through the gate at the back of the property for a good spot to meditate and reflect. The room gets 4/5: the sheets were clean, though there was a mildew smell in the bathroom. Location is 4.5/5.
