Casa El Maset

We stayed in room number 5 on the top floor, with what may be the highest terrace in Peñiscola's old town. From up there you get a 350-degree panorama covering both beaches. The room was spectacular, clean, and classically decorated, with air conditioning, a ceiling fan, and a small refrigerator. We were there on New Year's Eve, and it was insulated quite well. I really can't imagine a better location or view. The only catch is getting there: the streets are steep, and the stairs in this old house are narrow and awkward. To me, though, that’s part of the charm of staying somewhere so authentic and full of character. I’d call it a 5-star property, but 4 for access, which may matter more if comfort and ease are priorities.

Miguel, the owner, is a delight, and the place has a welcoming, family feel. The homemade vermouth, fresh market fish, and traditional sangria were all outstanding, as was the value for money. Ten out of ten in every way.

We found the room clean and tidy, and check-in and check-out were incredibly easy. The owner was so friendly, and Peñiscola Bay looks spectacular from this unbeatable location. We walked to the castle, went out for dinner, and explored the neighborhood. We only stayed one night, and the one thing we'd change is the size of the double bed, which could be a little bigger. Otherwise, we highly recommend it.

The terrace and its views make this simple hostel well worth considering, and the location is unbeatable. The owner is very friendly. The bathroom has been renovated, though the shower isn't fixed to the wall. It's on the fourth floor, reached by some pretty steep stairs. We'd definitely put it on our list of places to return to.
