Las Gaviotas Suites Hotel

The people working here are amazing, and I really enjoyed my holiday. The hotel looks lovely, the room was tidy and cozy, and breakfast was delicious. Just one thing: it would be good to have a coffee machine available all the time, or at least a kettle for tea or coffee.

The location was a big plus for us. Gaviotas is two minutes from the public beach, and there’s a bus stop right at the entrance. It’s easy to reach Port d’Alcúdia or even the airport by bus. We had a great stay, and the staff were polite and accommodating. I’d recommend it to friends visiting next year. We really liked the grounds, which are comfortable for lounging, and the 25m pool was a great option. The other pool is spacious too, with room for both children and adults. Our stylish room had a huge bed, a very spacious bathroom and excellent cleaning service. Some people compare the look to IKEA; I see Scandinavian minimalist design, which suits the resort. Breakfast and dinner were included, and both were delicious, with plenty of food that changed each day. Breakfast even included free sparkling wine. Lunch and alcohol cost extra, but can be ordered at the pool bar. There was no need for us to eat at restaurants. A couple of extra wall hooks would have helped with towels and robes. There was no tea or kettle in the room. I saw the hotel’s reply to other reviews saying you can order room service, but that doesn’t work for me: the service and tea cost extra, the cups are small, and I like a big cup. I don’t want to order another every few minutes at 2.5€ a cup. Plenty of cheaper hotels provide kettles, so I don’t see the reasoning. Breakfast being limited to two hours also felt short for a resort. Maybe it’s to encourage people to buy lunch at the pool bar, but I think they’d do that anyway. Early in the morning there was a horrible smell. I don’t think it was the hotel, maybe a nearby factory, since we smelled it on the streets too.

The hotel was generally good, with a recently refurbished look despite being a very old American Motel-style building from the 60s. Our room was large, with big beds and some wood details. There are three very different pools, and breakfast was good for this price range. I also liked the coffee by the pool and the staff uniforms. Our interactions with staff were generally good. The outside-facing rooms get street noise from mopeds and cars, and the windows are too thin. The Olympic pool side is much better, except that the gardener used a vacuum cleaner at 8am, which was too early. The curtains are too short, so light comes in early. Our terrace looked onto the neighbour. The toilet setup wasn’t good either: you can’t close a door without making noise, which isn’t comfortable if you’re sharing. The refurbishment looks cheap, a bit like Ikea. The lobby feels cold rather than warm and modern. Our mattress had a deep imprint from someone’s shape and needed turning. The sofa bed mattress was too thin and uncomfortable. Breakfast was served in an awful room, noisy, low-ceilinged and with no sound padding. It felt like a big canteen or American diner. A quieter indoor/outdoor place would be better. Breakfast hours, 8-10, are short. The rate was 350€ per night with breakfast, and dinner at 35 per person is too much. The gym is short on equipment. A good hotel with room to improve. This is a review from a frequent hotel guest and photographer.

I chose this hotel because it partners with Sunvelo, the cycling tour operator I use, and the fit is absolutely perfect, like peanut butter and jelly. It’s clearly set up for sports fans on cycling trips, as well as people training for triathlons and Ironman.
