Ciudad De Ponferrada

The rooms have plenty of space and were super clean. Staff were friendly, helpful, and had the manners you'd expect in hospitality. Parking on the streets was easy, with plenty of bars and restaurants nearby, and it's a short walk to the centre. Don't be put off by the hotel's location among modern, bland-looking apartment blocks. It's easy to find, right below Ponferrada's tallest building, which I think they call the Tetris building locally. It went up during Spain's property speculation period back in 2005. The food was average, including breakfast. There were no fresh juices, just concentrated ones, and the bacon was fatty and undercooked. The scrambled eggs didn't appeal to me. Then again, most hotels in Spain don't get breakfast right, so nothing new there. The bread and chorizo were excellent.

I'm outraged, and I wouldn't recommend this hotel or stay again. After we'd paid, the receptionist told us breakfast was €4.95 per person, an hour before checkout, but they charged €10.73 per person, more than double. For €30 for three people, the food was horrible, with no variety, awful coffee, and tiny portions. They put out just THREE tomato slices and FOUR cheese slices, and, again, they RAN OUT OF FOOD. I've seen 3-star hotels that were nicer, cozier, and more respectful to guests. Now I understand why the price was so low, maybe they don't have any customers :)) I'll let all my peregrino friends know this hotel is a scam ;) It might have been lovely as a 3-star hotel, but for a 4-star place it was missing things. The rooms were spacious and airy, the bathrooms large and clean, and the air conditioning was lovely. The WiFi was decent-ish, though very slow and failing every five minutes. They don't speak your language, so if you don't know Spanish, good luck. The breakfast was shallowly put together, and I didn't expect a 4-star hotel to run out of items. There's no hotel parking, just street parking wherever you can find a spot. Good luck with that, too.

The room and bathroom were great, and the hotel Wi-Fi was good: 13.10 Mbit/s down and 10.33 Mbit/s up. Staff were helpful, though finding a non-smoking room seemed to be an issue. The showerhead had a little limescale blocking it, and the hairdryer got too hot.

A nice hotel, and most of the staff were friendly. One woman at reception seemed too good to try speaking English.
