The younger woman who served dinner was nice, and she’s the reason service gets a star from me. The rest of it felt cold. Reception and cafeteria staff seemed to take an instant dislike to me because I was young and/or foreign, and they smiled at the Spanish guests. I’m learning Spanish and have felt welcome in plenty of places in Spain when I’ve tried to speak it, though I’m far from fluent. Here, nobody spoke English, and I felt like I was trespassing. I expected a hotel on the Camino to be more welcoming to foreign guests, who I’m sure make up a big part of its clientele and business. Check-in was the slowest I’ve ever experienced. After walking 32 km, I waited at least 30 minutes while two motorcyclists got checked in. The receptionist didn’t smile and treated me like an idiot when I couldn’t open my room, because their key cards work differently from any I’ve used before. Nobody welcomed me or offered useful information. At breakfast the next day, the cafeteria staff treated me like an inconvenience when I only wanted coffee and toast. The beds were rock hard, and the service felt just as hard.

The town centre spreads out, so it’s a bit of a walk. The hotel itself is well located by the Castle, and the prices are great. The staff were excellent, always friendly and helpful.

The room and location are the good points here. Hotel El Castillo is very close to the famous Templars Castle in Ponferrada. My room was dated, but reasonably spacious, with a comfortable bed; the bathroom was also quite large and fairly well equipped. Check-in was kind, if a little slow. Breakfast brought the rating down considerably. It was more like what you’d expect at a low-level hostal than a place presenting itself as a 3-star hotel. I’d recommend the hotel for its room and location, but not for any kind of food.

My room is sweltering, so I called the front desk. She said her boss had allowed them to switch the air conditioning back on, and I’m trying to cool the room now. I booked because the listing said there was air conditioning, but they shut it off on October 1. She also said the temperature comes from the wall. If you need air conditioning after October 1, don’t stay here.

It’s a simple hotel, but quite OK. The location is very good, close to the old town, and parking on the street was easy and free. Breakfast was simple but OK, and the hotel bar is nice. We did find a few tiny ants in one corner of the room.
