The only drawback for me was a machine that switched on and off through the night. If you’re a light sleeper, the noise can bother you. Still, we had an unforgettable weekend and I’d happily return to the area and choose Refugio del Segura again. The private parking and location right by the Segura River, which begins a few kilometers away, were excellent. Our group of friends found the rooms clean, spacious, well equipped, and fitted with comfortable beds. Pepi made everything easy from my first contact with her, and her friendly, helpful manner made our stay more pleasant. Breakfast wasn’t included, but she made us an exceptional one for a very reasonable price: excellent extra virgin olive oil, fresh tomato, juice, toast, freshly sliced ham, butter, jam, coffee, sweet rolls, and more. The food in Pontones is exceptional. I’ve never had lamb that delicious. There are lots of nearby routes worth trying, including the Water Route from Poyotello to Huelga Utrera. You should be somewhat used to hiking, though, since the route starts with a steep descent that you have to climb back up.

The person who helped us gave outstanding service and even did our laundry. We were a group of road cyclists passing through the park, and the apartments were fantastic and very comfortable. The location was unbeatable, and breakfast was very good.

Waking up to the river, rustling trees, and birds was so soothing. We had a carefree stay thanks to Pepi, the hostess, who was always ready to help. El Refugio is a lovely apartment complex on the gently flowing Segura River. The spacious, clean apartment had wonderful beds and a small kitchenette. There are all kinds of routes nearby, including ones suitable for smaller children. I’d recommend trying the local food in one of the village restaurants. For peace, comfort, beautiful nature, and authentic Spain, the Sierra de Segura is a must-see.
