We loved the old building, both inside and out, but sadly it was full when we arrived. Jesus at reception was incredibly helpful and genuinely sympathetic. He marked several other places on our map, then called around five hostels and pensions until he found somewhere for us. We were blown away by how much effort he made. I’d highly recommend this place.

The harbour bridge puts you right in the centre of interesting Portugalete, and the building has a proper old castle feel. It’s charming and good value if you’re happy with plenty of character. The interior is ancient and slowly falling apart, though, and there’s a damp smell. Some of the stairs feel like they could collapse under you. If you’d rather have that than a sterile renovation, this could be your place.
