The grounds are compact and well laid out, with coded gates that added some peace of mind. We found Los Tulipanes a great place to unwind and keep our bags, though it doesn't claim to be five star and isn't priced that way. The main road was almost silent, but at night voices and clippy-cloppy shoes could carry through the complex. This was our first stay at this end of Puerto del Carmen, and it was a pleasant change. You can walk to the main strip in a few minutes, past other apartment complexes, yet it feels much farther away because it's so calm. The location also has lovely mountain views and is closer to 'the ranch' and the airport. A taxi to the "old town" was €4.00 at the time of writing; the route avoids most of the main roads and their stop-start traffic from pedestrians, cyclists, delivery vehicles and buses. Check-in starts at 12.00PM and check-out is by 11.00AM, which worked well for early arrivals or late departures. Reception isn't open around the clock, but we didn't feel it needed to be.

We'd come back for another cheap break. It's about an 8-minute walk, uphill but manageable, to Spoons at the top of the strip. The apartment was standard but fine for the price, with a large balcony and English TV channels. The pools were nice, though the sunbeds need attention. There was no hairdryer, and reception wanted 15 euro to lend one for the 10 minutes I needed it. That wasn't a deposit.

For a budget stay, it was clean and comfortable, with basic furniture and beds and good value. The staff were friendly and efficient, and it's a nice little complex behind the new town, above the la penita complex. We lost hot water during our four-day stay, which was unfortunate. It was probably a one-off, and maintenance fixed it the next morning.

The shower was the best part. The pools were absolutely freezing, and the rooms could use some care. Walls are really thin, though our neighbours were great when we asked them to turn their music down. Reception staff were okay, but reception closes at 8pm and doesn't open again until 9am. Honestly, it wasn't the best.

The pool was lovely for cooling off from the hot sun, and I had a really nice few days here. The apartments are basic but clean, and they're fine as a place to sleep. What more do you need?
