Four nights still weren’t enough to see everything we wanted in the area. We walked to the cliffs opposite the Bufones de Pria in about 25 minutes. It’s worth looking them up or asking Carlos what they are. Ribadasella and Llanes are both worth exploring, and there’s also the MUJA Jurassic Museum of Asturias in Colunga, the Museo Etnografico de Asturias in Porrua, the Mirador del Fitu viewpoint, and the Tito Bustillo centre of cave paiting in Ribadesella. We found restaurants in Nueva, a short drive away, as well as in Ribadesella and Llanes. Carlos and Clara made us feel very welcome and helped make the stay so enjoyable. The property can be a little tricky to find, and the lanes are narrow, so get directions from Carlos before you arrive. There’s off-road parking. Our rooms were very clean, the beds comfortable, the heating good, and there was plenty of very hot water. We had a view of the Picos de Europa mountains. There’s a downstairs room with games, and breakfast is served in a separate conservatory-style building.

We stayed at Casa de Aldea Villalén for one night while walking the Camino del Norte, my husband, three friends, and me. The highlight was an incredible, abundant five-course meal at the property, the best we’ve had on our caminos. The grounds are beautiful and the setting is peaceful, and our hosts were warm, responsive, and accommodating. Our spacious rooms had private bathrooms, two comfortable chairs, a desk and chair, a refrigerator, and a TV. We’d highly recommend Villalén whether you’re a pilgrim or visiting the area. Thanks for such a memorable stay!

The rooms right under the roof were amazing and so spacious, and it’s a great base for exploring the area. My wife and I felt very welcome and had a cozy, friendly stay. The owner speaks a little English, and the son was very helpful with anything else. They gave us lots of ideas for things to do nearby, and even offered to drive us to the next restaurant if we didn’t have a car. Breakfast was splendid, highly recommend it.

The breakfast was enormous and set us up for the long, beautiful coastal walk the next morning. The evening meal was also fabulous and plentiful: soup and beef stew were just right for the weather, then chicken, salad, and fries arrived too. Carlos and his family looked after every detail and were incredibly caring. After 12 pilgrims walked all day in the rain on the Camino, they had already warmed our room, started the wood stove, and arranged all our soaked shoes around it. There was loads of hot water and a hot bath option. We’d love to come back for a holiday someday.

The owner was affable and the place has real potential, which made the lack of care feel like a shame. If you’re walking the Camino, there are no nearby amenities, so after a full day on foot the €22 dinner is the only option. It was very underwhelming and overpriced: bean soup, eggs, bacon, salad and chips, followed by pot creme caramel. To me, that shouldn’t have cost more than €10. The place was nice enough, but I couldn’t rate it higher.
