Camping Ampurdanes

The beach is very close, which was the one good thing for us. For what we paid, though, I was really disappointed. The camping area is tiny, with few shady spots for tents, and the woman working there was quite rude. The toilets were fairly clean, but there was no hand soap or toilet paper. The shower water swung between boiling and really cold, with nothing comfortable in between. The mini market is a 500m walk uphill. I wouldn't recommend it.

We reached Roses late, and our first two campsite choices were full, so we came here because they had room. Now I understand why. It was €42 for one night, which feels seriously overpriced. You're paying for the location, that's it. There was no toilet paper or soap, and not even enough room to change in the shower. We didn't try the catering, so I can't comment on it. We won't be back.

The beach is just a minute away, and its walkway is beautiful, though full of steps and rocks, so it's not suitable for bikes. During the off-season, the only store is in Roses. The showers could use some hangers or rails, and the bathrooms need toilet paper and soap.

This was our fourth visit, and it won't be the last. It's a simple, laid-back campsite with pitches of different sizes, some big and some tiny, all tucked among trees and greenery. The facilities are very clean, and the friendly staff are attentive. The sandy beach is just across the road, ideal for families or for a couple like us to lounge in the Mediterranean sun, read and swim. The area has a slow, relaxing pace, and we're glad there aren't many fellow Brits around. There's a fantastic coastal walk with rugged stretches and plenty of climbs, but the views are stunning. Mama Andrea's restaurant on site serves delicious moules, at prices you'd expect. We love the place. If having to use your own toilet roll or ask for help finding electricity bothers you, this might not be for you. We feel the fee is fair for the location and atmosphere.
