Our first night started badly: one of our sons took his pillow off a foldaway bed and hit his head on the big metal frame hidden beneath the sheet. The foldaway beds brought to our rooms for the children seemed dangerous for exactly that reason. February weather was lovely, but the hotel didn’t feel welcoming. There were hardly any outdoor tables and chairs except by the main area, and the pool was fenced off while closed for the season. On a sunny day I wanted to work outside. The Wi-Fi worked best near our bedroom, but there was no table or chair there; the seating near the bar and reception had a very inconsistent signal. I could see a separate events Wi-Fi with a strong signal, so I asked reception for its password because the general connection kept cutting out. The answer was simply no. The receptionist said he’d check with the manager, but when I came back ten minutes later, nothing had happened. I explained that my main disappointment wasn’t just the weak Wi-Fi, it was feeling ignored by the reception staff. I was told management would get back to us, but we left the next day without hearing from anyone. It also didn’t seem set up for families. There’s a small slide and a couple of swings at the far end, with nowhere for parents to sit. To get from the bedrooms to the pool you have to go through the main reception, which would be awkward when wet. The pools were shut during our stay, but that route wouldn’t be great in summer either. Extremely disappointing.

I’m keen on sport and golf and travel a lot, and I can simply say this Barcelo golf & spa resort in ballena ( Rota - Cadiz), designed by Josemarie Olazabal, is a GEM. The courses suit golfers of different abilities, with plenty to choose from. Management and staff go well beyond what’s expected, and the food, drinks, and pro-shop are all good. Javier, Concha, Jose, Marcos, beautriz and Jouquiin are just a few of the staff worth mentioning. Enjoy.

Melania at the front desk was so kind when we had a small problem with the air conditioner. She got us moved to another room straight away, and the staff really seem to care about guests having a pleasant stay. The hotel itself is lovely, with beautiful views all around, and I had a wonderful, deeply relaxing massage at the spa.

We stayed for two weeks and enjoyed every minute. The beach is a great one and only a 10-minute walk away, and there are some lovely little places to eat within walking distance. Public transport also makes it easy to explore the wider area. We booked bed and breakfast, though the restaurant on site offers good-value food if you want to eat there. The staff are great. This stay opened our eyes to one of Spain’s best regions by far. Until next time...

The service was excellent, but our room needed attention. We arrived at 16:30 to find it unclean and without towels, and maintenance had to be called because the terrace doors wouldn’t shut. It was right behind the children’s pool, where entertainment carried on all afternoon until around 20:00. We would have liked to know that before the visit. In summer, with the hotel so near the beach, finding parking outside is impossible.
