Hostal Concejo

A good-value spot in an excellent location for exploring Salamanca. The place is simple and clean, and everything works.

The location is great and the price is very sensible, so I'd recommend Hostal Concejo. We barely heard anything from outside, even on New Year's Eve, though the hard floors meant we could hear other guests walking to their rooms despite their efforts to be quiet. The room itself was small, but clean and warm, with a comfortable bed, plenty of good towels and everything needed in the bathroom. For the price, it was an absolute bargain. Driving there was a bit of a hassle. I felt I had to go through a pedestrian zone to get close, and since I don't speak Spanish, I wasn't sure what the signs meant. Google got me most of the way, then I had to turn down a side street. The parking garage was scary and really tight. If you don't have a small car or aren't confident maneuvering, I'd skip the hotel's parking. It looks like most of the walls and pillars have been scraped at some point.

The room could use a small fridge and a few more hangers. It was very clean, and reception gave very good service. The location is extremely convenient, though that also means there's a lot of noise at night, especially on Fridays and Saturdays. I'd recommend it.

Ask for Room 102, if you can. I booked four nights and wound up staying five, and this is the best value I've found euro for euro along the VdlP. It's my second Via de la Plata Camino, and I've stayed at Hostal Concejo twice as a pilgrim. The staff are welcoming to pilgrims and kindly let me check in a little early. Salamanca is well worth the stop. The city reminds me of Oxford and feels unlike any other Spanish city I've visited. Students help keep prices affordable, and there's a huge choice of places to eat and drink, from local food to international chains, all just a short walk away. The hostal is right in the centre but still feels peaceful, away from the crowds of students and tourists. Some pilgrims skip Salamanca, which I think is a massive error of judgement.
