Hostal Saldaña

The menu cost more than I felt the food was worth, and I can’t recommend the place. Even a simple meal should use fresh ingredients and cook them properly. The cachopo was disappointing, especially the frozen texture and cheese that tasted like plastic. The scrambled eggs seemed to be made by mixing whatever they had in the freezer. They were watery and had no flavor. We stopped in for the daily menu. If I’d known what it would be like, I would’ve tried the place next door.

The service was fine. For the €15 set menu, the lentils were tasty and came in a generous portion, while the beef stew was just average. The vegetable scramble and breaded ham and cheese cutlet were disappointing. I only found out by overhearing the staff offer grilled salmon to other diners that it was available as well as hake. I probably would’ve changed my order if I’d known.

The staff were terrific, and the portions were generous. We came for lunch on a Monday and were surprised by how good the food was. A real find, and I’d recommend it.

We hadn’t even realized it was lunchtime. While traveling by motorcycle, we usually pull in wherever we first spot a place when we get hungry, and that’s how we ended up here. It turned out to be a good choice. There’s nothing fancy about the restaurant, but the staff were really friendly, and the menus were tasty and filling. That was plenty for us.
