We couldn’t wait to get home and sleep without worrying about insects. Playa del Inglés is beautiful, which made it all the more disappointing that our stay at Apartamentos Guinea, Playa del Inglés, Gran Canaria was such a nightmare. I wouldn’t recommend it. After a long journey on very little sleep, the coach dropped us near the property, but we couldn’t get in. Gates surrounded the place and nobody answered despite several rings. My partner, who had booked the trip, had no phone reception and couldn’t reach our holiday organiser. We waited until another guest let us through. Reception was shut, so that explained the silence. We eventually found a number and got a code to collect the keys, but were sent to check in somewhere else entirely. The room didn’t look like the pictures and had no nice view. The hotel seemed nearly empty, so we asked about changing rooms. The man at reception was friendly and said they’d look into it because some rooms weren’t ready. He said someone would get in touch the next day, but nobody did. There was hair and small blood-like marks on the bedding. The floor was dirty, so I swept and mopped it myself. From the first night, we saw lots of silverfish in the bathroom. Two days later, large cockroaches came out of the bath drain, and little ones crawled behind the kitchen counters. Moving the fridge revealed old food underneath, and there was old food under the beds and sofa too. Food scraps filled the kitchen corners, with a hard lump of cheese stuck near the sink. During our 8-night stay, nobody cleaned the apartment, except for one visit to bring fresh towels. I swept and mopped every day, trying to stop the cockroaches spreading or getting into our luggage.

Many of the apartments have been bought, so it’s a bit of a mixed bag now. Reception has closed too, and you have to walk 5/10 minutes up the road to another apartment block to check in and so on.

The view from the top floor was great, and I had a good stay overall. The rooms were very clean and the towels were fresh. It would be handy to have an iron and ironing board, a few more kitchen bits, and basic tea and coffee. They advertise Wi-Fi, but unfortunately there wasn’t any.

This hotel ruined our Christmas trip and cost us the flight money too. We booked through Booking and the hotel confirmed it, so we then bought our tickets. The very next day, just 6 days before we were due to go, the hotel cancelled the reservation. The booking fee would take 7-12 days to refund, and we didn’t have money to book somewhere else, so the trip was off. Since the flights were with a low-cost airline, that money was gone, along with our holiday mood. This was all the hotel’s fault.

The apartments are spacious and pleasant, and the pools are beautiful and well cared for. The outdoor areas were spotless, with loungers around the pools, disinfected after each guest, plus outdoor showers. A friendly pool attendant kept an eye on safety. Even though there’s entertainment nearby, the grounds themselves felt calm and well guarded. The staff were friendly too. It’s just a few minutes’ walk to the beach and one of the shopping centres on the English coast. Shops stay open into the evening, when the area fills with restaurants and entertainment, including mini golf. There’s plenty for all ages, though younger people seem to go there most. Down on the beach, you’ll find more shops and places to eat. Highly recommend it. I’d pick this place over the others. It deserves all five stars.
