Pension Casablanca is right in the heart of Santa Cruz, and the facilities were spotless. My bed was very comfortable and came with two kinds of pillows. I liked having a shared dining area with a fridge, microwave, and kettle, as well as a lovely terrace. I was in Room 101, with a large, beautiful window over the street. Street noise didn't bother me, but light did: there is a small, uncovered window above the door facing the corridor. The corridor lights come on when people walk past, and the room lit up each time. I woke several times on the first night, so bring a sleep mask if you're sensitive to light. Check-in is self-service, and you need to follow the instructions sent in one of the many messages from Casablanca. I missed the message with the link and entrance code, so I had to call the helpdesk. It might help if Casablanca sent one clear email explaining there's no staff to receive guests and that you need to check yourself in, instead of four or five nearly identical messages where only one has the link. Good value for money overall.

The location was good and the cleaner was lovely, but the rest was dreadful. We didn't get the check-in information before arriving, and there was no host or management to help. We had an issue that still hadn't been resolved after our 11-day stay. Windows above the room door let light flood in all night, so don't stay here unless you sleep very heavily. I'd avoid it, especially for more than two nights.

The room itself was alright, with a good bed and a table lamp that gave off warm light. But nobody sent us check-in instructions, and no one answered the phone. We were left waiting outside, wondering if we'd be able to get in at all. By pure luck, a cleaner showed up and helped us a lot.

I can highly recommend the place, mainly because the staff were so understanding and helpful when I couldn't sleep on the very soft mattress. They found me another one. I hope the owner of Pension Casablanca takes the mattress issue seriously: it was uncomfortable and could also cause back or neck pain. One star off for the mattress, five for the staff.

I'm still staying here and really like how well kept everything is. The staff are super nice, the apartments are quiet, there are plenty of bathrooms, and cleanliness is spot on. If I come back, I'll definitely stay here again.
