Hotel restaurante Roma

The lobby looks nice, but my room felt institutional, smelled bad, and was loud. It had a perfume smell that seemed to cover up other odors. I woke up early and slept worse than I have in a hostel. I waited half an hour at the bar and still couldn’t order coffee because the bar staff wouldn’t help. A Spanish pilgrim eventually gave me some water from his bottle. Very rude. For this price, I expected better.

We had a nice room, and dinner at the restaurant was OK. Breakfast was awful, though. There was already stale, cold toast on the table, and when we asked for fresh coffee, a very bad-tempered waiter said we had to finish the stewed coffee first. There was little fruit and no yoghurt. Not a great way to start a day of walking on the Camino Way!

We’ve stayed at Hotel Roma twice before setting off on our Sarria to Santiago pilgrimages, and had a great stay both times. It’s clean and we slept well. The train station is right next door, and Mercadona is a five-minute walk away for last-minute snacks or toiletries. We had dinner at the hotel restaurant the night we arrived. It serves dinner and breakfast, and reservations are recommended. There’s also a small area for a quick breakfast. The Camino starts a few minutes’ walk away. Ask at the desk about the little shop down the street, where you can get a credential notebook for 2€ in cash.

We came back because we still remembered the excellent dishes and pleasant atmosphere from years ago. The meat and the rest of the food were just as outstanding this time. We did regret being seated outdoors without a choice of indoor or outdoor seating when we made the reservation. It was during a heatwave, and with no fan, it was hard to fully enjoy the meal. I understand the circumstances may have been unusual, but I hope the restaurant considers how to keep customers more comfortable in that kind of heat.
