Hotel Rural El Refugio

We were walking the Camino and stopped in for the buffet breakfast, though we didn’t stay at the hotel. It was incredibly good, very cheap, delicious and varied. We ate a lot and felt set up for the long walk ahead. The staff were kind and friendly, and the place looked beautiful and very clean. It was fully booked as we passed, so we couldn’t stay. Fellow hikers, get breakfast here. Big thanks to the hotel, we appreciate you!

I liked the hotel's concept and the Gran Canary household feel in the furniture and decorations, both in the room and common area. But tiny ants seemed to come from under the windowsill and swarmed my backpack where I had lollipops. That put a damper on our stay. It was also raining, and the common room ceiling leaked in several spots.

I couldn't stay here in the end. The website showed rooms available, but it rejected three different credit cards more than six times. I emailed to ask about getting a room for the night. They read it but didn't reply, which was really frustrating. Only after I called did they tell me the rooms were all full, even though the website still showed availability.

We spent a week at this fabulous little hotel way up in the mountains. The rooms were comfortable, breakfast was included with a nice choice of hot and cold food, and dinner one evening had a great selection and service. It was the tail end of the storm while we were there, so everything was a bit wet. The hotel sits on the camino walk, with people always passing along the route, and there were landslides on the road up. The roads are narrow, but just wide enough for two cars to pass.
