Hotel Carlos V

The location is what made this a four-star stay for me. I was glad to wake up in Toledo each morning, but otherwise it was just okay. Noise was the biggest problem. A nightclub next door stays open until 6 am on many days, with people shouting, crying and fighting outside. From my room, the bass and street noise came through clearly, so I couldn’t leave the window or balcony door open. The advertised air conditioning only ran the fan and wouldn’t cool the room. On my last morning, a crane outside my window was doing structural work, which was disruptive too. Housekeeping was hit or miss: the bed was made differently each day and sometimes left unfinished, and paper cups weren’t replaced after the first night. There were no reusable water or wine glasses. I also noticed quite a lot of mold on the caulking by the floor and tub, and in a bathroom ceiling corner.

We found it easy to get everywhere on foot from this hotel inside Toledo’s walls. Our room was spotless and had a large shower. Breakfast had a decent selection, and the front desk staff were friendly and helpful. I’d recommend it.

The room was spacious and had a lovely view, and the service was great. It’s also in a really convenient spot. I did find the TV a bit small, and I’d have preferred a duvet or quilt to the blankets they provided.

We weren’t able to enjoy the hotel as much as we’d hoped because my girlfriend developed a life-threatening condition during our stay. In a crisis, you find out who people really are, and the staff here were incredibly helpful and compassionate. They arranged an ambulance, stored our bags free for several days while we dealt with the hospital, and later checked in to ask how she was doing. The room itself was outstanding, spotlessly clean, tastefully furnished and cozy. The hotel is a short walk from Old Town Toledo’s main sights, with convenient public transport 150 metres away, plus a supermarket and good places to eat nearby. We’d absolutely recommend it.
