Medplaya Aparthotel Esmeraldas

We’re on our second day here, so I can’t give a full review yet. The hotel is clean enough for a three star, though a bit boring. We chose it as a base for exploring Tossa de mar because online reviews said it was quiet. Our room faces another hotel across the street, with a large swimming pool and activities day and night. The noise has kept my husband and me from sleeping well for two nights. After the first night, we asked reception to move us. They showed us a few available rooms, but all were on the same side, so we declined because we didn’t think the noise would change. I asked to move to the other side of the hotel. We were told that could happen the next day, so we packed and spent another sleepless night expecting to move. When we asked today, the receptionist said it wasn’t possible because the room had been assigned to someone else, despite a message about our swap. He said changing us would upset other important people. It feels like some customers matter more than we do. The hotel has failed at our main reason for staying, and now we’re stuck in this noisy room for five more days. The lack of sleep has partly ruined our holiday. I don’t think we’ll return. If you want a quiet room, ask for one on the pool side before you arrive. I’ll update my review of Tossa de mar after the holiday.

The city is fantastic, but the hotel was disappointing. For a thousand euros for four days, I expected at least a clean room. Reception said it would be cleaned on day two, but it wasn’t. I asked twice; they changed only the towels and left the bathroom uncleaned. The garage costs 20 euros a day, and they didn’t offer us the cheaper parking spot. The shower gets scalding hot, so you have to take a cold one if you don’t want to burn your skin. Some staff were unfriendly, and seem to need more training in how to deal with guests.

The room was disgusting, the shower was dirty, and there was no warm water. The cleaning lady took all our towels without replacing them or cleaning the room. She never made the beds, took out the trash, or left extra trash bags, and the breakfast area was so dirty too. We had a horrible experience and will never come back, especially for the price we paid. Very disappointed! This hotel should not have 3 stars. One star is more than enough.

The pool is small, but it hasn’t been busy, so it’s been perfect for us. We’re having a very pleasant week here. The rooms have what you need, including good air conditioning and an amazing shower. It’s very good for a reasonably cheap hotel.
