Hostal Trujillo

We arrived late, but the owner was very helpful and gave us spot-on suggestions for places to visit and eat. The furniture is a little dated, but the room was spotless and we slept peacefully. It had a TV and air conditioning too. Great value, five stars. 🥰

The person who helped us was really nice, and for a trip where I only needed somewhere to sleep, I'd come back. The hostel is dated and has clearly seen better days, though. Our room was small but cozy, the bedding was clean and in good condition, and the bathroom sink was tiny. The air conditioning was running full blast. It was December and not very cold, but I don't think it could have heated the room even if it had been. The worst thing for me was the plastic fitted sheet, like the kind used in a baby's crib. The bed made a rustling sound whenever you brushed against it. For a different kind of trip, I'd look at other options.

You can hear everything here, from people in other rooms to staff shouting from 9 a.m. The tap sounds as if it's about to explode, and sometimes there's no hot water. If you're after a few quiet days, this isn't the place. I usually travel every month, and this was my worst experience. The owner watches guests from the windows, doors, and hallway, so I felt watched and had no privacy. She also made us pay cash without giving a receipt or any document showing we'd paid. I found that shameless and wondered whether the taxes were being declared. We tried to complain, but the experience left us embarrassed in a beautiful town that's still well worth visiting. In my view, it's a one-star hostel that won't reach two stars unless they tear down the building and rebuild it.

At 50 euros a night, we felt it was expensive for a one-star hostel. There's no reception area, and the bathroom has no ventilation, so the musty smell is strong. The toilet doesn't flush properly either. Our room window looked onto a courtyard that seemed never to have been cleaned, with streaks of who-knows-what on the walls and doors. A damp cloth could easily fix those marks.
