Hotel Izan Trujillo

We only stopped for one night, and I wish we'd had longer to enjoy the beautiful hotel. The staff were welcoming and pleasant.

The old palace setting is nice, but the rooms felt decades out of date, with decor and amenities that seemed at least 50 years old. Breakfast was the worst I've ever had. The eggs looked rotten, the bacon was mostly fat, and even the bread seemed worse than supermarket bread from the cheapest shop. My colleagues stayed at other hotels and had a more pleasant time than I did. I wouldn't recommend it.

Our room was tucked away in a quiet corner, with no traffic noise or sound from other guests. The hotel, once a convent, has clean, spacious rooms, an indoor patio and an outdoor pool. The beds were so hard that I didn't sleep well. If you like a firm mattress, though, it may suit you fine.

The breakfast buffet and set dinner menus were good value, and the restaurant food was great for the price. Parking on the street is very limited, though the pool looks nice. The hotel combines a modern feel with a centuries-old convent, and you can still see some of the old frescos. The rooms are nicely furnished, but the light switches are odd: there’s a master switch, and you have to put your room key in a slot. The front desk can explain it quickly. North Americans may want to bring their own washcloths. Front desk staff speak English, while most restaurant staff speak only a little. It’s a short walk to a large historic square and the castle overlooking the town.
